About

The Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) is your eyes on the Hudson. Our environmental monitoring network collects high-frequency water quality and weather data in and along the river.

Our Background

New York’s Hudson River is a precious resource. It provides drinking water for many communities, navigation for commercial shipping, opportunities for recreation, and habitat for many plants and animals.

More severe flooding, extreme storms, drought, and increasing development have come together to threaten this resource we all depend on and create new challenges for Hudson River communities. Continuous, real-time data about river conditions is essential to meet these challenges.

Formed in 2008, the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) network provides the information we need to understand, manage, and protect the Hudson River, now and for generations to come. The data we collect helps address local and regional challenges, protect public health and safety, and inform research questions in and along the Hudson River.
